Exercise 19, § 2

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

In a metric space every relatively compact set is bounded. If XX is a topological space, show that the following conditions on XX are equivalent: α\alpha there exists a metric on XX, compatible with its topology, such that every bounded subset of XX (with respect to this metric) is relatively compact; β\beta XX is locally compact and has a countable base. [To show that α)⟹β\alpha) \Longrightarrow \beta), show that if every bounded set is relatively compact, then XX is locally compact and σ\sigma-compact. To show that β)⟹α\beta) \Longrightarrow \alpha), note that XX is metrizable by the corollary to Proposition 12; if dd is a metric on XX compatible with the topology of XX, and if ff is the function defined in § 1, Exercise 15 d), take the uniformity on XX defined by the two pseudometrics d(x,y)d(x, y) and ∣f(x)−f(y)∣|f(x) - f(y)|.]
