Exercise 25, § 2
General Topology, IX
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a metrizable space, let be its Stone-Čech compactification (, Exercise 7) and let be a bounded metric compatible with the topology of . For each , let denote the real-valued function obtained by extending by continuity to .
a) Show that whenever and are in and is in . For each other than , show that .
b) Show that if is complete with respect to the metric , then is the intersection of a sequence of open sets in . [Consider the set of all such that for at least one point , and show by using that .]
c) Conversely, show that if is the intersection of a sequence of open sets in , there exists a metric on which is compatible with the topology of , and with respect to which is complete. [Considering only the case in which , note that is the union of a family of compact sets ; for each , let , and show by using that for all , and that is continuous on . Finish the proof as in Exercise 16 b) of .]
