Exercise 10, § 3

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Two semi-absolute values w1,w2w_1, w_2 on a ring AA are said to be equivalent if the pseudometrics w1(x−y),w2(x−y)w_1(x - y), w_2(x - y) are equivalent. Show that, if ww is a semi-absolute value on AA, then awaw and w1/aw^{1/a} are semi-absolute values equivalent to ww for every real number a≥1a \geq 1.

b) If wiw_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) are semi-absolute values on a ring AA, the functions w=∑iwiw = \sum_i w_i and w′=sup⁡iwiw' = \sup_i w_i are two equivalent semi-absolute values on AA. If

ai=wi‾(0)anda=w‾(0), a_i = \overline{w_i}(0) \quad \text{and} \quad a = \overline{w}(0),
then a=⋂iaia = \bigcap_i a_i. If AiA_i denotes the completion of the quotient ring A/aiA/a_i endowed with the Hausdorff semi-absolute value associated with wiw_i, show that A/aA/a endowed with the Hausdorff semi-absolute value associated with ww is isomorphic to a subring of the product ring ∏iAi\prod_i A_i; show that (assuming that AA has an identity element 1) this ring is dense in ∏iAi\prod_i A_i if and only if the wiw_i satisfy the following condition: for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and for each index ii, there is an element xi∈Ax_i \in A such that wi(1−xi)≤εw_i(1 - x_i) \leq \varepsilon and wk(xi)≤εw_k(x_i) \leq \varepsilon for each index k≠ik \neq i.
