Exercise 12, § 4

General Topology, IX

Let X,YX, Y be two Hausdorff spaces.

a) Suppose that there is a closed set AA in XX which is not a countable intersection of open sets, and that there is a countably infinite subset BB of YY which is not closed. Let b∈B‾−Bb \in \overline{B} - B, and consider the subsets C=A×B, D=(X−A)×{b}C = A \times B,\ D = (X - A) \times \{ b \} in X×YX \times Y. Show that C∩D‾=C‾∩D=∅C \cap \overline{D} = \overline{C} \cap D = \varnothing, but that there is no pair U,VU, V of open subsets of X×YX \times Y such that C⊂U, D⊂VC \subset U,\ D \subset V and U∩V=∅U \cap V = \varnothing.

b) If X×YX \times Y is completely normal then either (i) one of the spaces X,YX, Y is perfectly normal, or (ii) one of the spaces X,YX, Y has the property that every countably infinite subset is closed (cf. § 5, Exercise 16).

c) Let X=[a,b]X = [a, b] be an uncountable well-ordered set such that [a,x[[a, x[ is countable for each x<bx < b. Endow XX with the topology in which {x}\{x\} is open for each x<bx < b and the intervals [x,b][x, b] (x<bx < b) form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of bb. Show that X×XX \times X is completely normal but that XX is not perfectly normal.

d) Show that if XX is a compact space such that X×X×XX \times X \times X is completely normal, then XX is metrizable (use Theorem 1 of § 2, no. 4).
