Exercise 4, § 4

General Topology, IX

Every linearly ordered set XX endowed with either of the topologies O+(X),O−(X)\mathscr{O}_+(X), \mathscr{O}_-(X) (Chapter I, §2§ 2, Exercise 5) is completely normal. (If AA and BB are two subsets of XX such that A∩B‾=B∩A‾=∅A \cap \overline{B} = B \cap \overline{A} = \varnothing, define a neighbourhood VxV_x of xx for each x∈Ax \in A, and a neighbourhood WyW_y of yy for each y∈By \in B, such that Vx∩Wy=∅V_x \cap W_y = \varnothing for all x∈Ax \in A and all y∈By \in B.)
