Exercise 13, § 5

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a totally non-meagre space which is connected and locally connected. Show that XX cannot be the union of an infinite sequence (Fn)(F_n) of non-empty mutually disjoint closed sets. (Let HH be the union of the frontiers HnH_n of the FnF_n in XX; show that HH is closed in XX and that each set HnH_n is nowhere dense in HH; to establish the latter point, consider a fundamental system of connected neighbourhoods of a point of HnH_n, and argue by contradiction, using Chapter I, § 11, Proposition 3.)
