Exercise 24, § 5

General Topology, IX

Let X, YX,\ Y be two topological spaces. A mapping f:X→Yf : X \to Y is said to be almost open if, for every closed subset SS of YY, f−1(S)‾\overline{f^{-1}(S)} is almost open in XX (Exercise 6).

a) Let g:X→Yg : X \to Y be a mapping with the property that there exists a meagre set MM in XX such that g∣Mg|_M is continuous. Show that gg is almost open. Consider the converse, when the topology of YY has a countable base.

b) Suppose that YY is perfectly normal (§\S 4, Exercise 8). Let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of almost open mappings of XX into YY such that

lim⁡n→∞fn(x)=f(x) \lim_{n \to \infty} f_n(x) = f(x)
exists for each x∈Xx \in X. Show that ff is almost open [argue as in Exercise 21 a)].
