Exercise 30, § 5

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a group and let dd be a metric on GG such that, with respect to the topology T\mathscr{T} defined by dd on GG, the mappings y→x0yy \to x_0y and y→yx0y \to yx_0 of GG into GG are continuous for each x0∈Gx_0 \in G.

a) Show that if GG is complete with respect to the topology T\mathscr{T}, then the mapping (x,y)→xy(x, y) \to xy is continuous on G×GG \times G (use Exercise 23).

b) Suppose in addition that T\mathscr{T} has a countable base. Show that the mapping x→x−1x \to x^{-1} is then continuous on GG, i.e., that the topology T\mathscr{T} is compatible with the group structure of GG. [In the group G×GG \times G, endowed with the topology T×T\mathscr{T} \times \mathscr{T}, consider the set FF of all points (x,x−1)(x, x^{-1}) where x∈Gx \in G; FF is closed in G×GG \times G, and the law of composition (x,x−1)(y,y−1)=(xy,y−1x−1)(x, x^{-1})(y, y^{-1}) = (xy, y^{-1}x^{-1}) defines a group structure on FF; show that the topology induced on FF by that of G×GG \times G is compatible with this group structure by using aa]. Then prove, by arguing as in Exercise 28 b), that the projection pr1pr_1 of FF onto GG is bicontinuous.]
