Exercise 5, § 5

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX and YY be two topological spaces and let AA be a nowhere dense subset of X×YX \times Y. If the topology of YY has a countable base, show that the set of all x∈Xx \in X such that the section A∩{x}/YA \cap \{x\} / Y of AA at xx is not nowhere dense relative to {x}×Y\{x\} \times Y is a meagre set in XX (if UU is any non-empty open set in YY, show that the set of all x∈Xx \in X such that {x}×U\{x\} \times U is contained in the closure of the section of AA at xx is a nowhere dense set in XX).

b) Show by an example that the result of a) can be false if the topology of YY does not have a countable base (take XX to be a Hausdorff space with no isolated points and YY to be the set XX with the discrete topology; and take AA to be the diagonal of X×YX \times Y).

c) If B,CB, C are subsets of X,YX, Y respectively and if one of B,CB, C is meagre (in X,YX, Y respectively), then B×CB \times C is meagre in X×YX \times Y. Conversely, if B×CB \times C is meagre in X×YX \times Y and if the topology of either XX or YY has a countable base, then one of the sets B,CB, C is meagre.

d) Deduce from c) that if the topology of one of the spaces X,YX, Y has a countable base, then D(B×C)=D(B)∧D(C)D(B \times C) = D(B) \wedge D(C) in the notation of Exercise 3.
