General Topology, IX

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let KK be a compact subset of R2\mathbf{R}^2. For each real number yy, let δ1(K,y)\delta_1(K, y) [resp. δ2(K,y)\delta_2(K, y)] denote the diameter of K∩([0,+∞[×{y})K \cap ([0, +\infty[ \times \{y\}) [resp. K∩([−∞,0]×{y})K \cap ([-\infty, 0] \times \{y\})]. Show that the functions y→δ1(K,y)y \to \delta_1(K, y) and y→δ2(K,y)y \to \delta_2(K, y) are upper semi-continuous. Let φ\varphi be an increasing continuous mapping of [0,+∞][0, +\infty] into itself such that φ(0)=1\varphi(0) = 1 and φ(+∞)=2\varphi(+\infty) = 2, and let

ψ(K,y)=φ(δ1(K,y)δ2(K,y))andf(K)=∫pr⁡x(K)ψ(K,y) dy. \psi(K, y) = \varphi(\delta_1(K, y)\delta_2(K, y)) \quad \text{and} \quad f(K) = \int_{\operatorname{pr}_x(K)} \psi(K, y) \, dy.
Show that ff satisfies the conditions (CA_I) and (CA_{III}) and that we have f(K∪K′)≤f(K)+f(K′)f(K \cup K') \leq f(K) + f(K') for each pair of compact subsets K,K′K, K' of R2\mathbf{R}^2. But if AA is the closed set defined by x≥0x \geq 0 and 0≤y≤10 \leq y \leq 1, show that f∗(A)=1f_*(A) = 1 and f∗(A)=2f^*(A) = 2. \*
