Exercise 14, § 6

General Topology, IX

Let XX be a metrizable space and let ff be a capacity on XX such that f(A∪B)≤f(A)+f(B)f(A \cup B) \leq f(A) + f(B).

a) With the notation of Exercise 12, show that f∗(A∪B)≤f∗(A)+f∗(B)f^*(A \cup B) \leq f^*(A) + f^*(B) and f∗(A∪B)≤f∗(A)+f∗(B)f_*(A \cup B) \leq f_*(A) + f_*(B) for any two subsets A,BA, B of XX. [If KK is a compact set contained in A∪BA \cup B, and UU is an open set containing BB, write KK in the form K=(K∩U)∪(K∩U‾)K = (K \cap U) \cup (K \cap \overline{U}).]

b) Let KK be a compact subset of XX having the power of the continuum, and let (A,B)(A, B) be a partition of KK into two sets such that every compact subset of AA or of BB is countable [cf. § 5, Exercise 18 d)]. Show that if f({x})=0f(\{x\}) = 0 for all x∈Xx \in X and if f(K)>0f(K) > 0, then neither AA nor BB is capacitable with respect to ff.
