Exercise 16, § 6
General Topology, IX
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be two metrizable spaces. A mapping is said to be a Borel mapping if, for each closed subset of , is a Borel set in . For each even (resp. odd) countable ordinal , is said to be of class if, for each closed subset of , belongs to [resp. ] (Exercise 4); then, for each open set in , belongs to [resp. ]. The Borel mappings of class 0 are precisely the continuous mappings.
a) The characteristic function of a subset of is of class if and only if .
b) Let be a mapping of class . Show that for every subset [resp. ], belongs to [resp. ]. (Use transfinite induction on .)
c) Let be a mapping of class and let be a mapping of class , where is a third metrizable space. Show that is a Borel mapping of class .
d) For each even (resp. odd) countable ordinal , let be a sequence of subsets of which belong to (resp. ) and which cover . If a mapping is such that is of class for each , then is of class . Give the analogous result for a finite sequence of subsets of which belong to (resp. ) and cover .
