Exercise 17, § 6

General Topology, IX

a) Let X,X′X, X' be two metrizable spaces, X′X' being of countable type, and let (Un′)(U'_n) be a countable base for the topology of X′X'. Let α\alpha be an even (resp. odd) countable ordinal. If a mapping f:X→X′f : X \to X' is such that f−1(Un′)f^{-1}(U'_n) belongs to Gα(X)\mathscr{G}_\alpha(X) [resp. Fα(X)\mathfrak{F}_\alpha(X)] for each nn, then ff is a Borel mapping of class α\alpha.

b) Let (Xn′)(X'_n) be a sequence of metrizable spaces of countable type. A mapping f=(fn):X→∏nXn′f = (f_n) : X \to \prod_n X'_n is of class α\alpha if and only if each fnf_n is of class α\alpha [use a)]. Deduce that, if XX is of countable type, the finite real-valued functions of class α\alpha on XX form a ring.

c) Let X,X′X, X' be two metrizable spaces of countable type, and let α\alpha be an even (resp. odd) countable ordinal. If a mapping f:X→X′f : X \to X' is of class α\alpha, show that its graph belongs to Fα(X×X′)\mathfrak{F}_\alpha(X \times X') [resp. Gα(X×X′)\mathscr{G}_\alpha(X \times X')] [use b) and Exercise 16 b)].
