Exercise 19, § 6

General Topology, IX

Let X,X′X, X' be two metrizable spaces and let ff be an almost open mapping (§ 5, Exercise 24) of XX into X′X'. Show that if B′B' is any Borel set in X′X', then f−1(B′)f^{-1}(B') is almost open in XX (cf. § 5, Exercise 6). Deduce that if gg is a Borel mapping of X′X' into a metrizable space X′′X'', then g∘fg \circ f is almost open. Give an example of a continuous mapping ff and an almost open mapping gg such that g∘fg \circ f is not almost open [cf. Exercise 10 b)].
