Let X be a metrizable space.
a) Show that the set of Borel subsets of X is the smallest subset F of P(X) which contains all closed subsets of X and is such that countable unions and countable intersections of sets of F belong to F. (Consider the subset S of F consisting of all A∈F such that X−A∈F.)
b) Show that the set of Borel subsets of X is the smallest subset F of P(X) which contains all open subsets of X and is such that every countable intersection of sets of F belongs to F, and every union of a sequence of mutually disjoint sets of F belongs to F (same method).
c) Every ordinal α can be written uniquely in the form α=ωβ+n, where n<ω (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 2, Exercise 15); α is said to be even or odd according as n is even or odd. For every countable ordinal α, we define by transfinite induction sets of subsets Fα(X), Gα(X) (or simply Fα, Gα) as follows: F0 (resp. G0) is the set of all closed (resp. open) subsets of X; if α is even and >0, Fα (resp. Gα) is the set of all subsets of X which are countable intersections (resp. countable unions) of sets belonging to ⋃ξ<αFξ (resp. ⋃ξ<αGξ); if α is odd, then Fα (resp. Gα) is the set of all subsets of X which are countable unions (resp. countable intersections) of sets belonging to ⋃ξ<αFξ (resp. ⋃ξ<αGξ). Show that the union of the Fα (resp. Gα) is the set of Borel subsets of X [use a)]. Deduce that if X is of countable type, the set of Borel subsets of X has power at most equal to the power of the continuum.
d) The relation A∈Fα is equivalent to ∁A∈Gα. Every finite union (resp. intersection) of sets of Fα (resp. Gα) belongs to Fα (resp. Gα). We have Fα⊂Fα+1∩Gα+1 and Gα⊂Fα+1∩Gα+1 (use transfinite induction).
e) Let f be a continuous mapping of X into a metrizable space Y. Show that f−1(Fα(Y))⊂Fα(X) and f−1(Gα(Y))⊂Gα(X).
f) If X and Y are two metrizable spaces and A∈Fα(X), B∈Fα(Y), [resp. A∈Gα(X), B∈Gα(Y)], then A×B∈Fα(X×Y) [resp. A×B∈Gα(X×Y)].
g) Let (Xn) be a sequence of metrizable spaces. Show that if An is a Borel set in Xn for each n, then ∏nAn is a Borel set in ∏nXn.
h) Let α>0 be an even (resp. odd) countable ordinal and let (An) be a countable covering of X formed of sets belonging to Gα (resp. Fα). Show that there is a partition (Bn) of X such that Bn⊂An and Bn∈Fα∩Gα for each n [use d)].
