Exercise 5, § 6

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let JJ be the Polish space NN\mathbf{N}^\mathbf{N} (N\mathbf{N} carrying the discrete topology) and let XX be a metrizable space of countable type. Show that for each countable ordinal α\alpha there is a subset GαG_\alpha of J×XJ \times X such that (i) Gα∈Gα(J×X)G_\alpha \in \mathscr{G}_\alpha(J \times X) (Exercise 4) and (ii) for every subset U∈Gα(X)U \in \mathscr{G}_\alpha(X) there exists z∈Jz \in J such that Gα(z)=UG_\alpha(z) = U. [We may proceed as follows by transfinite induction: the spaces JJ and JNJ^\mathbf{N} being homeomorphic, let ff be a homeomorphism of JJ onto JNJ^\mathbf{N}, and for each integer nn let fn=prn∘ff_n = \mathrm{pr}_n \circ f. If (An)(A_n) is a countable base of XX containing the empty set, take G0G_0 such that G0(z)=⋃nAfn(z)G_0(z) = \bigcup_n A_{f_n(z)} for each z∈Jz \in J. For each countable ordinal α\alpha, take Gα+1G_{\alpha+1} to be such that Gα+1(z)=⋂nGα(fn(z))G_{\alpha+1}(z) = \bigcap_n G_\alpha(f_n(z)) if α\alpha is even, and Gα+1(z)=⋃nGα(fn(z))G_{\alpha+1}(z) = \bigcup_n G_\alpha(f_n(z)) if α\alpha is odd. Finally, if α\alpha has no predecessor and if (λn)(\lambda_n) is an increasing sequence of ordinals such that α=sup⁡λn\alpha = \sup \lambda_n, take GαG_\alpha to be such that Gα(z)=⋃nGλn(fn(z))G_\alpha(z) = \bigcup_n G_{\lambda_n}(f_n(z)). Use the fact that fnf_n is continuous on JJ.]

b) In particular take X=JX = J. Show that the set pr1(Gα∩Δ)\mathrm{pr}_1(G_\alpha \cap \Delta), where Δ\Delta is the diagonal of J×JJ \times J, belongs to Gα(J)\mathscr{G}_\alpha(J) but not to Fα(J)\mathfrak{F}_\alpha(J) [argue by contradiction, using a)].
