General Topology, V
Let be a Hausdorff topology on , compatible with the group structure of and strictly coarser than the usual topology .
a) Show that every open neighbourhood of with respect to is unbounded in (note that a Hausdorff topology which is coarser than the topology of a compact space must coincide with the latter).
b) Let be a symmetric open neighbourhood of with respect to , and let be a symmetric open neighbourhood of with respect to such that . Show that if is the length of the component of (with respect to ) which contains , then every component (with respect to ) of has length . Moreover, the set of lengths of components of the interior of (with respect to ) is bounded [use a) and the fact that there exists a symmetric open neighbourhood of with respect to such that ].
c) Deduce from b) that is precompact and not locally compact in the topology .
d) Show likewise that is precompact and not locally compact in any topology compatible with its group structure and distinct from the discrete topology.
e) Let be a continuous homomorphism of a subgroup of , not consisting of alone and endowed with the topology induced by , into a complete Hausdorff group . Show that if is not an isomorphism of onto the subgroup of , then is relatively compact in [use c) and d)].
\* ) For every integer , give examples of continuous injective homomorphisms of into such that is dense in (cf. Chapter VII, § 1, no. 4, Corollary 1 of Proposition 7). \*
