General Topology, V

Let GG be a non-discrete locally compact group with a countable base of open sets, and let V0V_0 be a compact neighbourhood of the identity element ee of GG which contains no subgroup of GG other than {e}\{e\}.

a) Let (xn)(x_n) be a sequence of points of V0V_0 which converges to ee. For each nn, there exists an integer p(n)>0p(n) > 0 such that xnk∈V0x_n^k \in V_0 whenever k≤p(n)k \leq p(n) and xnp(n)+1∉V0x_n^{p(n)+1} \notin V_0, and we have lim⁡n→∞p(n)=+∞\lim_{n \to \infty} p(n) = +\infty. Show that there exists a subsequence (xkn)(x_{k_n}) of (xn)(x_n) such that, for every rational number rr with ∣r∣≤1|r| \leq 1, the sequence (xkn⌊rp(kn)⌋)(x_{k_n}^{\lfloor rp(k_n)\rfloor}) has a limit f(r)f(r) in V0V_0 (use the diagonal technique); and that if r,r′r, r' are rational numbers such that ∣r∣≤1,∣r′∣≤1|r| \leq 1, |r'| \leq 1 and ∣r+r′∣≤1|r + r'| \leq 1 we have

f(r+r′)=f(r)f(r′). f(r + r') = f(r)f(r').

b) Show that ff is continuous in a neighbourhood of 00 in Q\mathbf{Q}. [Argue by contradiction: if there were a sequence (rn)(r_n) of rational numbers tending to 00 and such that f(rn)f(r_n) tended to an element y≠ey \neq e in V0V_0, show that we should have ym∈V0y^m \in V_0 for all integers mm.]

c) Deduce from b) that there exists a non-trivial continuous homomorphism of R\mathbf{R} into GG (use Proposition 6 of § 1).

d) Let HH be a closed normal subgroup of GG other than GG itself, and suppose that there is a neighbourhood of the identity element in G/HG/H which contains no non-trivial subgroup. Show that there exists a continuous homomorphism f:R→Gf : \mathbf{R} \to G such that the composition

R→fG→G/H \mathbf{R} \xrightarrow{f} G \to G/H
is non-trivial.
