Exercise 13, § 1

General Topology, VI

Identifying Rn\mathbf{R}^n with Rn−1×R\mathbf{R}^{n-1} \times \mathbf{R}, let ff be a continuous mapping of an open subset AA of Rn−1\mathbf{R}^{n-1} into R\mathbf{R}, and let SS be its graph. Show that the subspace SS of Rn\mathbf{R}^n is homeomorphic to AA, and that the complement of SS in the "cylinder" A×RA \times \mathbf{R} is a dense open set in A×RA \times \mathbf{R}, and has exactly two components if AA is connected.
