Exercise 3, § 1

General Topology, VI

Let AA and BB be two countable dense subsets of R2\mathbf{R}^2. Show that there exists a homeomorphism of R2\mathbf{R}^2 onto itself which maps AA onto BB. (Show first that, by means of a rotation, we can reduce to the case where the projections pr1pr_1 and pr2pr_2 are injective mappings of AA and BB into R\mathbf{R}. Then define, by a suitable inductive process, a bijection of AA onto BB which determines a monotone mapping of pr1Apr_1 A onto pr1Bpr_1 B and a monotone mapping of pr2Apr_2 A onto pr2Bpr_2 B. Finally, using Exercise 11, Chapter IV, § 2, show that this mapping is a homeomorphism which can be extended to a homeomorphism of R2\mathbf{R}^2 onto itself.) Deduce that, if CC is a subset of R2\mathbf{R}^2 whose complement is dense, CC is homeomorphic to a subset of the complement of Q2\mathbf{Q}^2 in R2\mathbf{R}^2. Generalize these results to Rn,n>2\mathbf{R}^n, n > 2.
