Exercise 7, § 1

General Topology, VI

Let AA be a non-empty connected open set in Rn\mathbf{R}^n (n>1n > 1) and let (Vp)p∈N(V_p)_{p \in \mathbf{N}} be a countable family of linear varieties in Rn\mathbf{R}^n, each of which is of dimension ≤n−2\leq n - 2. Show that if BB is the union of the VpV_p, then A∩B‾A \cap \overline{B} is dense in AA and connected. (To show that A∩B‾A \cap \overline{B} is dense in AA, use induction on nn. Then show that if x,yx, y are two distinct points of AA, there exists for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 a point y′∈Ay' \in A such that ∥y′−y∥≤ε\|y' - y\| \leq \varepsilon and such that the closed segment with end-points xx and y′y' meets BB only at xx. Finally use Exercise 6 to show that A∩B‾A \cap \overline{B} is connected.)
