General Topology, VII

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let GG be a locally compact abelian group and let HH be a subgroup of GG isomorphic to Rp×Tq\mathbf{R}^p \times \mathbf{T}^q where p,qp, q are integers ⩾0\geqslant 0; suppose also that G/HG/H is isomorphic to either R\mathbf{R} or T\mathbf{T}. Show that GG is isomorphic to the product of HH and a closed subgroup LL isomorphic to G/HG/H. [Apply Chapter V, § 3, Exercise 7 d), to obtain a continuous homomorphism ff of R\mathbf{R} into GG such that f(R)⊄Hf(\mathbf{R}) \not\subset H; hence construct another continuous homomorphism g:R→Gg : \mathbf{R} \to G such that f(t)−g(t)∈Hf(t) - g(t) \in H for all t∈Rt \in \mathbf{R} and g(R)∩H={e}g(\mathbf{R}) \cap H = \{ e \}. Note that f(H)f(H) is a proper closed subgroup of R\mathbf{R} and that, for every element z≠ez \neq e in HH, there exists a continuous homomorphism uu of R\mathbf{R} into HH such that u(1)=z.u(1) = z .]

b) Let GG be a Hausdorff abelian topological group, let HH be a closed subgroup of GG isomorphic to Rp×Tq\mathbf{R}^p \times \mathbf{T}^q, and suppose that there exists a surjective continuous homomorphism φ:R→G/H\varphi : \mathbf{R} \to G/H. Show that there exists a continuous homomorphism f:R→Gf : \mathbf{R} \to G such that f(R)∩H={e}f(\mathbf{R}) \cap H = \{ e \} and G=H⋅f(R)G = H \cdot f(\mathbf{R}). [Reduce to case a) by considering the least upper bound on GG of the given topology and the topology for which a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of oo is formed by the p‾−1(φ(I))\overline{p}^{-1}(\varphi(I)), where p:G→G/Hp : G \to G/H is the canonical mapping and II runs through a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of oo in R\mathbf{R}; show that GG is locally compact in this new topology (cf. Chapter III, § 4, Exercise 10 e)).]

c) Give an example where the restriction of pp to f(R)f(\mathbf{R}) is not bicontinuous [cf. § 1, Exercise 2f)].
