Exercise 5, § 2

General Topology, VII

Let GG be a connected topological group and let HH be a compact normal subgroup of GG with no arbitrarily small subgroups (Chapter III, § 2, Exercise 30). Show that HH is contained in the centre of GG. (Observe that for ss close to ee in GG, the image of HH under x→sxs−1x \to sx s^{-1} is arbitrarily close to ee.)
