Exercise 3, § 1
General Topology, VIII
a) Let be a maximal ordered field, endowed with the topology , which is compatible with its field structure (Chapter IV, § 3, Exercise 2). Let
b) Deduce that, if is a maximal ordered field, its completion with respect to (which is a field with a natural order structure: Chapter IV, § 4, Exercise 2) is a maximal ordered field.
c) Let be an ordered field and let be the field of formal power series in one indeterminate over ; linearly order by taking the elements in to be and the formal power series whose term of lowest degree has coefficient . Show that , endowed with the topology , is complete, but that is not a maximal ordered field (show that the polynomials of are irreducible for each integer ).
d) In the example of c), take . Let be a maximal ordered algebraic extension of ; show that is not complete in the topology . (Embed in the field of formal power series with well-ordered exponents, ordered in the same manner as , and embed in a maximal ordered extension of . Observe that is complete, and give an example of a Cauchy sequence in which converges to an element which is not algebraic over ; choose so that there is an infinite number of -isomorphisms of into an algebraic closure of , such that the images of under these isomorphisms are all distinct.)
