Bourbaki

Exercise 5, § 1

General Topology, VIII

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let KK be a non-commutative division subring of the division ring of quaternions H\mathbf{H}; show that the centre ZZ of KK is a subfield of the centre R\mathbf{R} of H\mathbf{H}. (Observe that every element of KK commutes with every element of the field LL generated by Z∪RZ \cup \mathbf{R}; if Z⊄RZ \not\subset \mathbf{R}, the field LL would be a maximal subfield of H\mathbf{H}, and KK would be contained in LL, contrary to hypothesis.)

b) Deduce that every isomorphism ff (not necessarily continuous) of H\mathbf{H} onto a division subring of H\mathbf{H} is an inner automorphism x→axa−1x \to axa^{-1} of H\mathbf{H}. [The restriction of ff to R\mathbf{R} is an isomorphism of R\mathbf{R} onto a subfield of R\mathbf{R}, by virtue of aa); use Exercise 3 of Chapter IV, § 3.]
