Exercise 1, § 2

General Topology, VIII

Let aa be a non-zero complex number, and nn an integer > 0. For each real number r>0r > 0 such that rn≤∣a∣r^n \leq |a|, show that there exists z∈Cz \in \mathbf{C} such that ∣z∣=r|z| = r and ∣a+zn∣=∣a∣−rn|a + z^n| = |a| - r^n. Deduce that, if ff is a polynomial of degree > 0, with complex coefficients, we cannot have ∣f(z0)∣≤∣f(z)∣|f(z_0)| \leq |f(z)| at all points zz of a neighbourhood of a point z0z_0, provided that f(z0)≠0f(z_0) \neq 0.
