Bourbaki

Exercise 4, § 2

General Topology, VIII

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let KK be the smallest Pythagorean subfield of R\mathbf{R} and let K′=K(i)K' = K(i). Let GG be the multiplicative group of elements of K′K' of absolute value 1 (a subgroup of U\mathbf{U}). Show that GG is not isomorphic to the additive group of numbers of KK mod 1. (Observe that in the latter group there exist elements of any prime order pp; on the other hand, if pp is a prime such that p−1p - 1 is not a power of 2, show that GG contains no ppth root of unity other than 1, by noting that the degree over Q\mathbf{Q} of every element of K′K' is a power of 2.)
