Exercise 6, § 1

General Topology, X

a) Let XX be a topological space, YY a uniform space, and let Φ\Phi be a filter on the set C(X;Y)\mathscr{C}(X; Y) which converges pointwise to a function u0u_0. Then u0u_0 is continuous at a point x0∈Xx_0 \in X if and only if, for each entourage VV of YY and each set M∈ΦM \in \Phi, there is a neighbourhood UU of x0x_0 and a mapping u∈Mu \in M such that (u0(x),u(x))∈V(u_0(x), u(x)) \in V for all x∈Ux \in U.

b) Let XX be a quasi-compact space, YY a uniform space and Φ\Phi a filter on C(X;Y)\mathscr{C}(X; Y) which converges pointwise to a function u0u_0. Then u0u_0 is continuous on XX if and only if, for each entourage VV of YY and each set M∈ΦM \in \Phi, there exists a finite number of functions ui∈M(1≤i≤n)u_i \in M (1 \leq i \leq n) such that, for each x∈Xx \in X, we have (u0(x),ui(x))∈V(u_0(x), u_i(x)) \in V for at least one index ii.
