Bourbaki

Exercise 7, § 1

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let X,YX, Y be two Hausdorff uniform spaces. For each continuous mapping f:X→Yf : X \to Y, let G(f)⊂X×YG(f) \subset X \times Y be the graph of ff; G(f)G(f) is closed in X×YX \times Y (Chapter I, § 8, no. 1, Proposition 2, Corollary 2); hence f→G(f)f \to G(f) is an injective mapping of C(X;Y)\mathscr{C}(X; Y) into the set F~(X×Y)\tilde{\mathfrak{F}}(X \times Y) of non-empty closed subsets of X×YX \times Y.

a) Show that the mapping f→G(f)f \to G(f) of Cu(X;Y)\mathscr{C}_u(X; Y) into F~(X×Y)\tilde{\mathfrak{F}}(X \times Y) is uniformly continuous when F~(X×Y)\tilde{\mathfrak{F}}(X \times Y) carries the uniformity defined in Chapter II, § 1, Exercise 5.

b) Let Γ\Gamma be the image of C(X;Y)\mathscr{C}(X; Y) in F~(X×Y)\tilde{\mathfrak{F}}(X \times Y) under the mapping f→G(f)f \to G(f), and let φ:Γ→Cu(X;Y)\varphi : \Gamma \to \mathscr{C}_u(X; Y) be the inverse mapping. Show that if XX is compact, then φ\varphi is continuous on Γ\Gamma (argue by contradiction).

c) Take both XX and YY to be the compact interval [0,1][0, 1] of R\mathbf{R}. Show that φ\varphi is not uniformly continuous on Γ\Gamma.
