General Topology, X

a) Let XX be a compact space, and let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a continuous surjection of XX onto a compact space YY. Show that the mapping

(*) This result does not extend to the case where XX is the non-metrizable compact space βN\beta \mathbf{N} and YY is the closed set βN−N\beta \mathbf{N} - \mathbf{N}.

af : u \to u \circ f of C(Y;R)\mathscr{C}(Y; \mathbf{R}) into C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}) is a (norm-preserving) isomorphism of C(Y;R)\mathscr{C}(Y; \mathbf{R}) onto a closed subalgebra of C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}) containing the identity element.

b) Conversely, let AA be a closed subalgebra of C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}) containing the identity element. Show that there exists a continuous surjection ff of XX onto a compact space YY such that afaf is an isomorphism of C(Y;R)\mathscr{C}(Y; \mathbf{R}) onto AA. {If (uλ)λ∈L(u_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} is a family which is dense in AA, consider the continuous mapping x→(uλ(x))x \to (u_\lambda(x)) of XX into RL\mathbf{R}^L and use the Weierstrass-Stone theorem.}

c) Deduce from b) that, for each sequence (un)(u_n) of elements of C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}), there exists a metrizable compact space YY and a continuous surjective mapping f:X→Yf : X \to Y such that the unu_n belong to the image of C(Y;R)\mathscr{C}(Y; \mathbf{R}) under afaf.
