Exercise 16, § 4
General Topology, X
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
We retain the hypotheses and notation of Exercise 15.
a) Let be a closed ideal in the ring . Show that in the quotient ring the set of canonical images of functions of is the set of elements with respect to an ordering which makes a lattice-ordered ring [observe, using Exercise 15 e), that if and belong to , then so do and every function such that ]. The canonical image in of the set of constant functions is isomorphic to as an ordered field.
b) In particular, for each , the field is canonically endowed with an ordered field structure. The maximal ideal is said to be real if is isomorphic to , hyper-real otherwise. For to be hyper-real it is necessary and sufficient that and that there is a unit such that . Deduce that all the maximal ideals of are real if and only if is pseudo-compact (Chapter IX, § 1, Exercise 21).
c) For each , let be the canonical homomorphism . For to be in , it is necessary and sufficient that there should exist such that in [observe that the relation is equivalent to ]. For to be , it is necessary and sufficient that there should exist such that in . [Note that, if , there exists such that , by using Exercise 15.]
d) Show that if is hyper-real, the transcendence degree of the field over is at least equal to . [Let be a unit of such that is infinitely large with respect to . Show that as runs through the elements of a base of over (consisting of numbers ), the elements of are algebraically independent.]
\* e) For each point , let denote the polynomial . For each real number , let be the sum of the multiplicities of the zeros of in such that ; and for each integer such that , let be the smallest real number such that . Show that each of the functions is continuous on (use Rouché’s theorem).
f) Show that, for each , the ordered field is real-closed. [Let be a polynomial of odd degree with coefficients in ; the functions , where the are the functions defined in e), are continuous on , and for each there is an index such that ; deduce that the product belongs to .]
g) Let be an infinite discrete space and let be a bijection of onto the set of finite subsets of ; for each let be the set of all such that ; these sets form a base of a filter on . Let be a point of such that the corresponding ultrafilter on (Chapter I, § 9, Exercise 27) is finer than . Let be a subset of such that , and let be a surjective mapping . For each put . Show that for all , and deduce that for all [use c)]. Conclude that .
