Exercise 20, § 4

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a compact space, let AA be an R\mathbf{R}-algebra of finite rank with an identity element, and endow AA with the topology defined in Chapter VI, § 1, no. 5. Let BB be a subalgebra of the R\mathbf{R}-algebra C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A), and suppose that, for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0, each pair of distinct points x,yx, y of XX and each pair of elements u,vu, v of AA, there exists f∈Bf \in B such that ∥f(x)−u∥≤ε\|f(x) - u\| \leq \varepsilon and ∥f(y)−v∥≤ε\|f(y) - v\| \leq \varepsilon (∥ ∥\| \ \| being any norm defining the topology of AA); and suppose, further, that if uu and vv belong to R\mathbf{R}, there is a function f∈Bf \in B satisfying these conditions and taking its values in R\mathbf{R}. Show that, under these hypotheses, BB is dense in C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A) with respect to the topology of uniform convergence. [Show first that every function of C(X;R)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}) can be uniformly approximated by functions of BB and then that the same is true of every constant a∈Aa \in A, by using the hypotheses and a partition of unity.]

b) Take A=HA = \mathbf{H}, the division ring of quaternions over R\mathbf{R}. Let BB be a subalgebra of the R\mathbf{R}-algebra C(X;H)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{H}) such that: (i) for each f∈Bf \in B, the conjugate f‾\overline{f} of ff [defined by f‾(x)=f(x)‾\overline{f}(x) = \overline{f(x)} for all x∈Xx \in X] belongs to BB; (ii) for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0, each pair of distinct points x,yx, y of XX and each pair of elements u,vu, v of H\mathbf{H}, there exists f∈Bf \in B such that ∥f(x)−u∥≤ε\|f(x) - u\| \leq \varepsilon and ∥f(y)−v∥≤ε\|f(y) - v\| \leq \varepsilon. Show that BB is dense in C(X;H)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{H}) [use a)].

c) Extend the results of Exercise 13 to the algebra C(X;H)\mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{H}), and show in particular that every closed ideal of this algebra is two-sided [argue as in Exercise 19, using b)].
