Exercise 21, § 4

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a totally disconnected compact space, and let AA be a topological ring. Endow the ring C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A) with the topology of uniform convergence, which is compatible with the ring structure. Let aa be a left ideal of C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A) and, for each x∈Xx \in X, let J(x)\mathfrak{J}(x) be the closure in AA of the set of f(x)f(x) for f∈af \in a; J(x)\mathfrak{J}(x) is a closed left ideal of AA. Show that aˉ\bar{a} is identical with the set of all f∈C(X;A)f \in \mathscr{C}(X; A) such that f(x)∈J(x)f(x) \in \mathfrak{J}(x) for all x∈Xx \in X (note that, for each x∈Xx \in X, the neighbourhoods of xx which are both open and closed form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of xx).

b) Suppose in addition that AA has a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of oo which are two-sided ideals. Let BB be a subring of C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A) which contains the constants and separates the points of XX. Show that BB is dense in C(X;A)\mathscr{C}(X; A). [For each closed subset FF of XX, each x∉Fx \notin F and each neighbourhood UU of oo in AA, show that there exists f∈Bf \in B such that f(x)=1f(x) = 1 and f(y)∈Uf(y) \in U for all y∈Fy \in F.]
