General Topology, X

Let (Xi)1≤i≤n(X_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} be a finite family of compact spaces, let X=∏i=1nXiX = \prod_{i=1}^n X_i be their product, and for each index ii let FiF_i be a closed subset of XiX_i. Show that every continuous real-valued function on XX which vanishes on the union of the sets Fi×∏j≠iXjF_i \times \prod_{j \neq i} X_j (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n) can be uniformly approximated by finite sums of functions of the form

(x1,…,xn)→u1(x1)⋯un(xn), (x_1, \ldots, x_n) \to u_1(x_1) \cdots u_n(x_n),
where uiu_i is a continuous real-valued function on XiX_i which vanishes on FiF_i (1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n).
