Algebra, VIII, p. 39

Let M be an A-module and pp and qq two projectors of M.

a) We have p(M)⊂q(M)p(M)\subset q(M) if and only if we have qp=pqp=p; the kernel Ker(pp) is contained in Ker(qq) if and only if we have qp=qqp=q.

b) The sum p+qp+q is a projector if and only if we have pq=−qppq=-qp. If p+qp+q is a projector and if in M, the relation 2x=02x= 0 implies x=0x= 0, then we have pq=0pq= 0 and qp=0qp= 0.

c) Prove that the following properties are equivalent:

(i) We have pq=qppq=qp.

(ii) We have q(p(M))⊂p(M)q(p(M))\subset p(M) and qq(Ker(pp))⊂\subset Ker(pp).

(iii) There exists a sequence (p1,p2,p3,p4)(p_1, p_2, p_3, p_4) of pairwise orthogonal projectors of M such that p=p1+p2,q=p1+p3p=p_1+p_2,q=p_1+p_3, and 1M=p1+p2+p3+p41_M=p_1+p_2+p_3+p_4.

Such a sequence, when it exists, is unique: we have p1=pqp_1=pq.
