Algebra, VIII, p. 117

Let kk be a commutative ring and A a kk-algebra.

a) Prove that the set of isomorphism classes of invertible (A,A)k(A,A)_k-bimodules (No. 8), endowed with the multiplication law [P][Q]=[P⊗AQ][P][Q] = [P\otimes_AQ], is a group; we denote it by Pk(A)\mathscr{P}_k(A).

b) Let G be the automorphism group of the kk-algebra A; for g∈Gg\in G, we denote by AgA_g the left A-module AsA_s endowed with the right A-module structure defined by x⋅a=xg(a)x\cdot a=x g(a). Show that the mapping g↦[Ag]g\mapsto [A_g] is a group homomorphism from G to Pk\mathscr{P}_k(A), with kernel the subgroup of inner automorphisms.

c) Let Z be the center of A; define an exact sequence

1→PZ(A)→Pk(A)→G 1\rightarrow \mathscr{P}_Z(A)\rightarrow \mathscr{P}_k(A)\rightarrow G

If the algebra A is commutative, the group Pk(A)\mathscr{P}_k(A) is the semidirect product of G and PA(A)\mathscr{P}_A(A).
