Algebra, VIII, p. 159, § 9. Radical

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a two-sided nil ideal of A, and let e‾\overline{e} be an idempotent in the ring A/aA/\mathfrak{a}. There exists an idempotent ee in A whose canonical image in A/aA/\mathfrak{a} is equal to e‾\overline{e}.

Let aa be an arbitrary representative of e‾\overline{e} in A. The element a−a2a-a^2 of A is nilpotent because it belongs to a\mathfrak{a}. Choose a polynomial P∈Z[X]P\in \mathbf{Z}[X] satisfying the conditions of Lemma 1. We have a−P(a)∈A(a−a2)a-P(a)\in A(a-a^2), so the element e=P(a)e= P(a) of A has the desired property.

Suppose that e‾\overline{e} belongs to the center of the ring A/aA/\mathfrak{a}. There does not necessarily exist an idempotent ee in the center Z of A lifting e‾\overline{e} (VIII, p. 172, Exercise 31). However, if e‾\overline{e} belongs to the image of Z in A/aA/\mathfrak{a}, then it lifts to an idempotent in Z because Z∩aZ\cap \mathfrak{a} is a nil ideal of Z.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
