Algebra, VIII, p. 183, § 11. Grothendieck Groups

Let φ\varphi be a mapping from C\mathscr{C} to an abelian group G (written additively); set φ(E)=φ\varphi (E) =\varphi(cl(E)) for every A-module E of type C\mathscr{C}. We say that φ\varphi is an additive function of modules (resp. a weakly additive function of modules) if we have φ(E)=φ(E′)+φ(E′′)\varphi (E) =\varphi (E') +\varphi (E'') for every exact sequence (resp. for every split exact sequence)

of modules of type C\mathscr{C}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
