Algebra, VIII, p. 184, § 11. Grothendieck Groups

Let C\mathscr{C} be the set of classes of A-modules of finite length. The mapping long⁡A:C→Z\operatorname{long}_A : \mathscr{C} \to \mathbf{Z} that sends a class of A-modules of finite length to its length is an additive function of modules (II, §1, No. 10, p. 213, Corollary 3). The results of this subsection are a generalization of the results on modules of finite length established in II, §1, No. 10, p. 212–214.

In the remainder of this subsection, we consider an additive set C\mathscr{C} of A-modules and an additive mapping φ\varphi from C\mathscr{C} to an abelian group GG.

Let E and E′E' be modules of type C\mathscr{C}; then E⊕E′E \oplus E' is of type C\mathscr{C}, and there exists a split exact sequence (II, §1, No. 9, p. 210)

0⟶E⟶E⊕E′⟶E′⟶0; 0 \longrightarrow E \longrightarrow E \oplus E' \longrightarrow E' \longrightarrow 0;

from this, we deduce

(1)

φ(E⊕E′)=φ(E)+φ(E′). \varphi(E \oplus E') = \varphi(E) + \varphi(E').

In particular, we have φ(0)=0\varphi(0) = 0.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
