Algebra, VIII, p. 207

Let pp be a prime number. Denote by C\mathscr{C} the set of classes of Z\mathbf{Z}-modules of the form (Z/p2Z)n⊕(Z/p3Z)m(\mathbf{Z}/p^2\mathbf{Z})^n\oplus (\mathbf{Z}/p^3\mathbf{Z})^m for n,m∈Nn, m\in \mathbf{N}.

a) Prove that C\mathscr{C} is additive but not hereditary. What is the smallest hereditary set H\mathscr{H} containing C\mathscr{C}?

b) Prove that every short exact sequence of modules of type C\mathscr{C} splits. Describe the group K(C)K(\mathscr{C}).

c) Construct an exact sequence

0→M0→M1→M2→M3→M4→0 0\rightarrow M_0\rightarrow M_1\rightarrow M_2\rightarrow M_3\rightarrow M_4\rightarrow 0

of modules of type C\mathscr{C} such that the classes of M0⊕M2⊕M4M_0\oplus M_2\oplus M_4 and M1⊕M3M_1\oplus M_3 in K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) are distinct.

d) Is the natural homomorphism from K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) to K(H)K(\mathscr{H}) injective?
