Algebra, VIII, p. 267, § 14. Central Simple Algebras

Let L be the diagonalizable subalgebra of EndD(V)_D(V) associated with a direct sum decomposition V=⊕i∈IViV =\oplus_{i\in I}V_i.

a) The algebra L is maximal among the diagonalizable subalgebras of the K-algebra EndD(V)_D(V) if and only if every ViV_i has dimension 1 over D.

b) The algebra L is a maximal commutative subalgebra of EndD(V)_D(V) if and only if we have D = K and every ViV_i has dimension 1 over K.

If every vector space ViV_i has dimension 1 over D, then we have

[L : K] = Card(I) = dimD(V)_D(V),

so L is maximal among the diagonalizable subalgebras of EndD(V)_D(V). In the opposite case, there exists an index j∈Ij\in I such that dimD(Vj)⩾2_D(V_j)\geqslant 2. Choose two nonzero linear subspaces Vj′V'_j and Vj′′V''_j of VjV_j with direct sum VjV_j. The diagonalizable subalgebra of EndD(V)_D(V) associated with the direct sum decomposition V=(⊕i∈I−{j}Vi)⊕Vj′⊕Vj′′V = (\oplus_{i\in I-\{j\}}V_i)\oplus V'_j\oplus V''_j contains L and is not equal to L; assertion a) follows.

The commutant L′L' of L in EndD(V)_D(V) consists of the endomorphisms of the form (xi)↦(ui(xi))(x_i)\mapsto (u_i(x_i)), with (ui)∈∏i∈I(u_i)\in \prod_{i\in I} EndD(Vi)_D(V_i). The algebra L is a maximal commutative subalgebra of EndD(V)_D(V) if and only if we have L=L′L = L' (VIII, p. 261, Lemma 3, a)). This relation is therefore equivalent to “EndD(Vi)=K_D(V_i) = K for every i∈i\in I”; assertion b) follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
