Algebra, VIII, p. 399, § 21. Linear Representations of Finite Groups

Given a linear representation (M,π)(M, \pi ) of G, the contragredient or dual representation π∨\pi^{\vee} of π\pi is the representation of G in the K-module dual to M defined by the relation π∨(g)=tπ(g−1)\pi^{\vee}(g) =^t\pi (g^{-1}) for every g∈Gg\in G (cf. II, §2, No. 5, p. 234). If M is a finite-dimensional free K-module, then so is its dual, and we have χπ∨(g)=χπ(g−1)\chi_{\pi^{\vee}}(g) =\chi_{\pi}(g^{-1}) for every g∈Gg\in G.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
