Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let n∈N. Denote by Dn the subset of Nn consisting of the elements (p1,...,pn) such that p1⩾⋯⩾pn; endow it with the lexicographical order. For p∈Dn, denote by p′ the element of Dn defined by pi′=pi+n−i. Let X=(X1,...,Xn) be a sequence of variables; set Δ(X)=∏i<j(Xi−Xj).
a) Let P∈Z[X] be an antisymmetric polynomial, that is, a polynomial satisfying the relation P(Xσ(1),...,Xσ(n))=ε(σ)P(X1,...,Xn) for every element σ∈Sn. Prove that there exists a symmetric polynomial Q∈Z[X] such that P = ΔQ.
b) For every p∈Dn, set Sp(X)=Δ(X)−1 det(Xjpi′)1⩽i,j⩽n. Prove that Sp is a homogeneous symmetric polynomial of degree ∑pi with integer coefficients.
c) If q=(qi)1⩽i⩽n is an element of Dn and P is an element of Q[X], then we denote by [P]q the coefficient of xq in P. Set Kpq=[Sp]q. Prove that we have Kpp=1 and Kpq=0 for q>p (expand the equality det(Xjpi′) =Sp(X)Δ(X) in
the lexicographical order). Deduce that the polynomials Sp for p∈Dn form a basis of the Z-submodule of Z[X] consisting of the symmetric polynomials. d) Let Y=(Y1,…,Yn) be a sequence of variables. Prove the equality of formal power series
1≤i,j≤n∏(1−XiYj)−1=p∈Dn∑Sp(X)Sp(Y) (use the equality
det((1−XiYj)−1)1≤i,j≤n=Δ(X)Δ(Y)∏1≤i,j≤n(1−XiYj)−1 (cf. III, §8, p. 639, Exercise 5) by calculating the left-hand side using the expansion of
(1−T)−1 as a formal power series). e) Let
P∈Q[X] be a symmetric polynomial. For every
p∈Dn, set
ωp(P)=[PΔ]p′. Prove the equality
ωp(Sq)=δpq. Deduce that for every
q∈Dn, we have
[P]q=p∈Dn∑Kpqωp(P). f) For
α∈Nn, set
fα(X)=∏j=1n(∑iXij)αj and
cα=∏j=1njαjαj!1. Prove that we have
∑α∈Nncαωp(fα)ωq(fα)=δpq for
p,q in
Dn (observe that we have
1≤i,j≤n∏(1−XiYj)−1=k=0∏∞exp(k1(i∑Xik)(j∑Yjk))=α∈Nn∑cαfα(X)fα(Y)).
