Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Consider the representation πn\pi_{\mathbf{n}} of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n associated with the action of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n on the set n=[1,n]\mathbf{n}=[1, n] (Exercise 6). Let kk be a positive integer and χk\chi_k the character of the representation ∧kπn\wedge^k\pi_{\mathbf{n}}.

a) Let σ∈Sn\sigma \in \mathfrak{S}_n. Prove the formula χk(σ)=∑ε(σ∣S)\chi_k(\sigma ) =\sum\varepsilon (\sigma |S), where the sum is taken over the set of subsets S of n\mathbf{n} with kk elements such that σ(S)=S\sigma (S) = S.

b) Prove that ∧kπn\wedge^k\pi_{\mathbf{n}} is the irreducible representation of Sn\mathfrak{S}_n associated with the element (n−k,1,...,1)(n-k,1, . . . ,1) of Sn\mathscr{S}_n (calculate the character of this representation using the Frobenius formula, observing that the only terms of the sum

Δ(X\mathbf{X})fα(X)=∑σ∈Snε(σ)X1σ(n)−1...Xnσ(1)−1fα(X)f^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}(\mathbf{X}) =\sum_{\sigma\in\mathfrak{S}_n}\varepsilon (\sigma )X^{\sigma(n)-1}_1. . .X^{\sigma(1)-1}_nf^{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}(\mathbf{X})

for which the coefficient of Xp′\mathbf{X}^{\mathbf{p}'} is nonzero correspond to the permutations σ\sigma that satisfy σ(i)⩽i+1\sigma (i)\leqslant i+ 1 for every ii and σ(i)=i\sigma (i) =i for 1⩽i<n−k.)1\leqslant i < n-k.)
