Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let qq be a power of a prime number and F a finite field with qq elements; take G to be the group GL(2,F)\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(2,F).

a) Describe the conjugacy classes of G (distinguish four types of classes, containing, respectively, 1,q2−1,q2+q1,q^2-1,q^2+q, and q2−qq^2-q elements).

b) The group G acts on the projective line P over F; consider the representation πP\pi_P of G (Exercise 6). For any group homomorphism λ:F∗→K∗\lambda : F^*\rightarrow K^*, denote by δλ\delta_{\lambda} the representation of degree 1 associated with the homomorphism λ∘\lambda \circ det from G to K∗K^*, and set πλ=πP⊗δλ\pi_{\lambda}=\pi_P\otimes \delta_{\lambda}. Prove that πλ\pi_{\lambda} is irreducible, and calculate its character.

c) Let B be the subgroup of G consisting of the upper triangular matrices. For λ,μ\lambda , \mu in Hom(F∗,K∗^*,K^*), denote by βλ,μ\beta_{\lambda ,\mu} the representation of B of degree 1 defined by βλ,μ((aij))=λ(a11)μ(a22)\beta_{\lambda ,\mu}((a_{ij})) =\lambda (a_{11})\mu(a_{22}), and set πλ,μ=\pi_{\lambda ,\mu}= IndBG(βλ,μ)^G_B(\beta_{\lambda ,\mu}). Prove that πλ,μ\pi_{\lambda ,\mu} is irreducible for λ≠μ\lambda \not=\mu, while πλ,λ\pi_{\lambda ,\lambda} is isomorphic to πP⊕δλ\pi_P\oplus \delta_{\lambda} (apply Exercise 8). The representations πλ,μ\pi_{\lambda ,\mu} and πλ′,μ′\pi_{\lambda',\mu'} are isomorphic if and only if the subsets {λ,μ}\{\lambda , \mu\} and {λ′,μ′}\{\lambda ', \mu'\} of Hom(F∗,K∗^*,K^*) are equal.

d) Let F′F' be an extension of F of degree 2; choosing a basis of F′F' over F allows one to identify F′∗F^{'*} with a subgroup of G = AutF(F′)_F(F'). Let φ∈\varphi \in Hom(F′∗,K∗^{'*},K^*); calculate IndF′∗G(φ)^G_{F^{'*}}(\varphi ), and prove that it is equal to IndF′∗G(φq)^G_{F^{'*}}(\varphi^q). Denote by λ\lambda the restriction of φ\varphi to F∗F^*, and set χφ=χπP⊗πλ,1−χπλ,1−\chi_{\varphi}=\chi_{\pi_P\otimes\pi_{\lambda ,1}}-\chi_{\pi_{\lambda ,1}}- IndF′∗G(φ)^G_{F^{'*}}(\varphi ). Prove that if φ≠φq\varphi \not=\varphi^q, then we have ⟨χφ,χφ⟩=1\langle \chi_{\varphi}, \chi_{\varphi}\rangle = 1 and χφ(1)=q−1\chi_{\varphi}(1) =q-1, so that χφ\chi_{\varphi} is the character of an irreducible representation πφ\pi_{\varphi} of dimension q−1q-1. Prove that we thus obtain 21q(q−1)^1_2q(q-1) nonisomorphic irreducible representations. e) Prove that the irreducible representations πλ\pi_{\lambda} for λ∈\lambda \in Hom(F∗,K∗^*,K^*),πλ,μ,\pi_{\lambda ,\mu} for a subset {λ,μ}\{\lambda , \mu\} of Hom(F∗,K∗^*,K^*) with two elements, and πφ\pi_{\varphi} for φ∈\varphi \in Hom(F′∗,K∗^{'*},K^*) with φ≠φq\varphi \not=\varphi^q are pairwise nonisomorphic and that every irreducible representation of G is isomorphic to one of them.
