Let D be a local ring; we denote by D∗D^* the group of invertible elements of D, by Dab∗D^*_{ab} the quotient of D∗D^* by its derived group, and by π:D∗→Dab∗\pi : D^*\rightarrow D^*_{ab} the canonical homomorphism. Let V be a free right D-module of finite dimension nn. We denote by B(V) the set of bases of V and by Ω(V) the set of mappings ω:B(V)→Dab∗\omega : B(V)\rightarrow D^*_{ab} satisfying the following two conditions:

(i) For λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, . . . , \lambda_n in D∗D^* and (v1,...,vn)∈B(V)(v_1, . . . , v_n)\in B(V), we have ω(v1λ1,...,vnλn)=\omega (v_1\lambda_1, . . . , v_n\lambda_n) = ω(v1,...,vn)π(λ1...λn)\omega (v_1, . . . , v_n)\pi (\lambda_1. . . \lambda_n).

(ii) For i≠ji\not=j and λ∈D\lambda \in D, we have ω(v1,...,vi+vjλ,...,vn)=ω(v1,...,vn)\omega (v_1, . . . , v_i+v_j\lambda , . . . , v_n) =\omega (v_1, . . . , v_n). a) Let ee be an element of V and W a submodule of V supplementary to eDeD. Let φ∈Ω(W)\varphi \in \Omega(W); prove that there exists a unique element ω\omega of Ω(V) satisfying

ω(w1,...,wn−1,e)=φ(w1,...,wn−1) \omega (w_1, . . . , w_{n-1}, e) =\varphi (w_1, . . . , w_{n-1})

for every basis (w1,...,wn−1)(w_1, . . . , w_{n-1}) of W (adapt the proof of Proposition 1).

b) Deduce that given two elements ω\omega and ω′\omega ' of Ω(V), there exists a unique element tt of Dab∗D^*_{ab} such that we have ω′=tω\omega '=t\omega.

c) Let uu be an automorphism of V. Prove that there exists a unique element of Dab∗D^*_{ab}, denoted by det uu, such that we have ω(u(v1),...,u(vn))=\omega (u(v_1), . . . , u(v_n)) = (det uu)ω(v1,...,vn)\omega (v_1, . . . , v_n) for every basis (v1,...,vn)(v_1, . . . , v_n) of V and every element ω\omega of Ω(V). The mapping u↦u\mapsto det uu from GL(V)\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(V) to Dab∗D^*_{ab} is a group homomorphism.

d) Take V=DdnV = D^n_d, so that GL(V)\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(V) is identified with the group GLn(D)\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}_n(D) of invertible square matrices of order nn. Prove that the mapping det:GLn(D)→Dab∗:\mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}_n(D)\rightarrow D^*_{ab} is the unique group homomorphism with value 1 on all matrices Bij(λ)(i≠j,λ∈D)B_{ij}(\lambda ) (i\not=j,\lambda \in D) and satisfying det(diag(λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, . . . , \lambda_n)) =π(λ1...λn)=\pi (\lambda_1. . . \lambda_n) for λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, . . . , \lambda_n in D∗D^*.

e) Adapt Examples 2 through 6 of No.4 to this setting.
