Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 52

The notations are those of Exerc. 12 of Chap. I, §3. In particular, g\mathfrak{g} is a Lie algebra, M a g\mathfrak{g}-module, and Hp(g,M)=Zp(g,M)/Bp(g,M)H^p(\mathfrak{g},M) = Z^p(\mathfrak{g},M)/B^p(\mathfrak{g},M) is the cohomology space of degree pp of g\mathfrak{g} with values in M.

a) Show that Bp(g,M)B^p(\mathfrak{g},M) and Zp(g,M)Z^p(\mathfrak{g},M) are stable under the natural representation θ\theta of g\mathfrak{g} on the space of cochains Cp(g,M)C^p(\mathfrak{g},M). It follows that there is a representation of g\mathfrak{g} on Hp(g,M)H^p(\mathfrak{g},M). Show that this representation is trivial (use the formula θ=di+id\theta =di+id, loc. cit.).

b) Let k‾\overline{k} be an algebraic closure of kk. Let x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g} and let xMx_M be the corresponding endomorphism of M. Let λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, . . . , \lambda_n (resp. μ1,...,μm\mu_1, . . . , \mu_m) be the eigenvalues (in kk) of adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x (resp. of xMx_M), repeated according to their multiplicity. Show that the eigenvalues of the endomorphism θ(x)\theta (x) of Cp(g,M)C^p(\mathfrak{g},M) are the μj−(λi1+⋯+λip)\mu_j-(\lambda_{i_1}+\cdots +\lambda_{i_p}), where 1≤j≤m1\leq j\leq m and

1≤i1<i2<⋯<ip≤n 1\leq i_1< i_2<\cdots < i_p\leq n

Deduce, using a), that Hp(g,M)=0H^p(\mathfrak{g},M) = 0 if none of the μj−(λi1+⋯+λip)\mu_j-(\lambda_{i_1}+\cdots +\lambda_{i_p}) is zero.

c) Assume that the representation g→\mathfrak{g}\rightarrow End(M) is faithful, and that xx satisfies the condition:

μj1+⋯+μjp≠μk1+⋯+μkp+1(Sp) \mu_{j_1}+\cdots +\mu_{j_p}\not=\mu_{k_1}+\cdots +\mu_{k_{p+1}}(S_p)

for all j1,...,jp,k1,...,kp+1∈1,mj_1, . . . , j_p, k_1, . . . , k_{p+1}\in 1, m.

Show that we then have Hp(g,M)=0H^p(\mathfrak{g},M) = 0 (remark that the eigenvalues λi\lambda_i of adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x are of the form μj−μk\mu_j-\mu_k, and apply bb))).
