Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 4. Regular elements of a Lie group

Let U be a neighbourhood of 0 in g\mathfrak{g} and exp an exponential map from U to G, étale at every point of U and such that g1\mathfrak{g}^1(exp xx) =g0(x)=\mathfrak{g}^0(x) for all x∈Ux\in U.

(i) The function rAd0r^0_{Ad} is constant and equal to the rank of g\mathfrak{g} on exp(U).

(ii) If x∈Ux\in U, exp xx is regular if and only if xx is a regular element of g\mathfrak{g}.

(iii) An element a∈a\in exp(U) is regular if and only if g1(a)\mathfrak{g}^1(a) is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

Let l=l= rk(g\mathfrak{g}). If x∈Ux\in U is a regular element of g\mathfrak{g},

rAdr_{Ad}(exp xx) == dimg1\mathfrak{g}^1(exp xx) == dimg0(x)=l\mathfrak{g}^0(x) =l.

Since the regular elements of g\mathfrak{g} belonging to U constitute a neighbourhood of xx and exp is étale at xx, this shows that exp xx is regular and that rAd0r^0_{Ad}(exp xx) =l=l. The regular elements of g\mathfrak{g} belonging to U being dense in U, we have rAd0(a)=r^0_{Ad}(a) = ll for all a∈a\in exp(U). Let a∈a\in exp(U) be a regular element of G and let x∈Ux\in U be such that a=a= exp xx. Since g0(x)=g1(a)\mathfrak{g}^0(x) =\mathfrak{g}^1(a), dim g0(x)=rAd0(a)=l\mathfrak{g}^0(x) =r^0_{Ad}(a) =l. Consequently, xx is a regular element of g\mathfrak{g} and g1(a)\mathfrak{g}^1(a) is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}. Finally, if a∈a\in exp(U) and g1(a)\mathfrak{g}^1(a) is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g},

rAd(a)=r_{Ad}(a) = dimg1(a)=l=rAd0(a)\mathfrak{g}^1(a) =l=r_{Ad}^0(a),

so aa is regular.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
