Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 226

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a simple Lie algebra of dimension 3, and Φ\Phi its Killing form (cf. §1, Exerc. 15, 16, 17).

a) An element x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g} is regular if and only if Φ(x,x)≠0\Phi (x, x)\not= 0. Let hx=kx\mathfrak{h}_x=kx be the Cartan subalgebra generated by such an element. Show that hx\mathfrak{h}_x is splitting if and only if 2Φ(x,x)2\Phi (x, x) is a square in kk.

b) Show that

g\mathfrak{g} is splittable ⇐⇒g\Leftarrow \Rightarrow \mathfrak{g} is isomorphic to sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k).
