Assume that kk is an ordered field. Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split semi-simple Lie algebra of rank ll; put dimg=l+2m\mathfrak{g}=l+ 2m.

a) Show that the Killing form Φ\Phi of g\mathfrak{g} is the direct sum of a neutral form of rank 2m2m and a positive non-degenerate form of rank ll; in particular, its index is mm.

b) Let φ\varphi be an involutive automorphism of g\mathfrak{g} whose restriction to h\mathfrak{h} is −-Id. Show that the form

is symmetric, non-degenerate, and positive.

c) Let k=k(α‾)k=k(\overline{\alpha}), where α\alpha is an element <0<0 in kk. Denote by cc the non-trivial kk-automorphism of k′k'. Let gc\mathfrak{g}_c be the kk-subspace of g(k′)=k′⊗kg\mathfrak{g}_{(k')}=k'\otimes_k\mathfrak{g} formed by the elements yy such that

(1⊗φ).y=(c⊗1).y (1\otimes \varphi ).y= (c\otimes 1).y

Show that gc\mathfrak{g}_c is a kk-Lie subalgebra of g(k′)\mathfrak{g}_{(k')} and that the injection of gc\mathfrak{g}_c into g(k′)\mathfrak{g}_{(k')} extends to an isomorphism from√k′⊗kgc\surd k'\otimes_k\mathfrak{g}_c to g(k′)\mathfrak{g}_{(k')}. The algebra gc\mathfrak{g}_c is semi-simple, and αh\alpha \mathfrak{h} is a Cartan subalgebra of it.

d) Show that the Killing form of gc\mathfrak{g}_c is negative. Deduce that gc\mathfrak{g}_c is not splittable (unless g=0\mathfrak{g}= 0).

e) When k=Rk=\mathbf{R}, show that Int(gc\mathfrak{g}_c) is compact.
